  • Here is the website for the loupes I was talking about in class the other day.

    http://perioptix.com/index.html

The Hogies are what I like. There is a short video that is pretty informative about the benefits of these vs other loupes.

The least expensive pair, with a 2.5X magnification, is $695.00.

  • Testing....to see if this works

  • I also wanted to let you all know that when I confirmed my patient for tomorrow, she had no idea that it would take more than one appointment. She was under the impression that we would finish tomorrow, so I guess they are not informed at the time they make the appointment that they will need to come back. Either we need to inform our patients of this or make sure whoever is making the appointments does--has anyone else run into this problem?

    -Anne

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:43 PM

  • I had that problem with my patient last Thurs. She did not know that it would take more than one appointment. She said that she was told that she would only be about 1 1/2 hours.

I wonder if these people are just saying that or if someone is actually telling them this. I don't think that anyone at the front office would say that, but who knows.

  • Thanks Anne for the info! My patient last week was under the same impression...that it would only take one appointment. We need to let Mrs. Moss or Jean know about this because that is frustrating for our patients and for us because there is always that possibility that our patients might not come back, which can really hurt us this semester.

  • One more thing...I wanted to let everyone know how great the Children's Medical Center rotation was yesterday. Lynette and I learned so much by watching Ester and Nancy (the hygienists) work with the children. For example, if the child was not cooperating they would say "let me count your teeth" for the initial exam and for fluoride they would tell them that it was "yummy vitamins". Also, while doing RC polishing they would use the suction to retract the cheek. It was a great learning experience and everyone there was so welcoming!

By Blogger Robbi, at 1:56 PM

  • hey anne..is that fancy way to spell loops or am i just waaay behind the times??? :) jk

I wanted to say how much I've enjoyed rotation at the VA hospital. Linda the hygienist there is soooo nice and helpful. If anyone is concerned about going to the VA, RELAX!!! Its a great experience and you'll thoroughly enjoy it!!

  • I had a patient that thought she was going to be able to get a filling today. She ended up staying and I think she will come back so thats good. I went to COHC so I have no new info for yall but I did have a great day in clinic!

  • Jessica-

I think that it's a good thing you moved to Texas!! I'm not sure if the language taught in Arkansas has done you justice :)

You can always check out Merriam-Webster online--it also allows you to hear the proper pronunciation ;)

    Main Entry: loupe
    Pronunciation: 'lüp
    Function: noun
    Etymology: French
: a small magnifier used especially by jewelers and watchmakers

    Main Entry: 2loop
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English loupe, of unknown origin
1 a : a curving or doubling of a line so as to form a closed or partly open curve within itself through which another line can be passed or into which a hook may be hooked b : such a fold of cord or ribbon serving as an ornament
2 a : something shaped like a loop b : a circular airplane maneuver executed in the vertical plane
3 : a ring or curved piece used to form a fastening, handle, or catch
    4 : a closed electric circuit
5 : a piece of film or magnetic tape whose ends are spliced together so as to project or play back the same material continuously
6 : a series of instructions (as for a computer) that is repeated until a terminating condition is reached
    7 : a sports league
8 : a select well-informed inner circle that is influential in decision making (out of the policy loop)
    - for a loop : into a state of amazement, confusion, or distress

    Main Entry: 1loop
    Pronunciation: 'lüp
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English loupe; perhaps akin to Middle Dutch lupen to watch, peer
    archaic : LOOPHOLE 1a

(ps--you, Kendra, and Matt were correct with "Pianist", but so was Steve and I)

  • Helen said:
I used word "loop" in my clinical log, I bet Mrs. Moss might change it to Loupe.
I also had a return patient who thought he would have teeth cleaned in one appointment, he told me that the student who just graduated told him that all he need would be just teeth cleaning when he comes back in three month, he had impression that there would be no paperwork.
Not only we need to tell our patients that there will be more than one appointment, but also we might need to tell them there will be a lot of paperwork.

  • Hi everyone! Well, I'm sure everyone already knows this, but if you were wondering.......... the National Board Exam is Tuesday, March 28 and the deadline for the application is Monday, Feb. 13. I am still waiting for the date of the WREB, but I will let you know.

By Blogger Robbi, at 12:56 PM

  • If anyone has new patients coming in and you have already done your competencies please let me know. I am really struggling with getting new patients in and haven't been able to complete any of my competencies. I would really appreciate any help with this and if I can help any of you with anything please let me know. Thanks so much!

Robbi, thanks for the info on the national board exam, it's highly possible that I'm the only one that didn't already know. I hope everyone is studying hard for Dr. Abraham's test. Have fun, see you girls later :). BTW, I got my wedding dress this weekend!!!

I found this really neat web site over the weekend & thought it would be very helpful to you for critiquing your x-rays & to impress Dr. Dryer!! I will email the info as well :-)

Anne-you have WAY too much time on your hands. If anyone ever has a question about anything just ask Anne and she will apparently look it up for you! She said not to worry though b/c she will help us by highlighting the "important" information! Good lucks studying this weekend ladies!

By Blogger Lynette, at 5:50 AM

  • Have wanted to send a message and kept forgeting to. In regards to confirming patients, Gene has told me several times that she tells all patients how many visits it can take and that it seems many just don't see how it could take that long.
Also, when screeening patients, Mrs. Dryer let me know that all she needed was a mirror, explorer, and probe from the clinic. No need to use my own instruments. You all probably knew that but I didn't and had to figure it out. Just FYI.

  • Hi guys,
I tried the loupes once, but they gave me a headache. They say that we need to try them a couple of times to see if we like them and to not go by our first impression, but I don't know if I can do it again.
Hope you are feeling better Mrs. Moss...

It looks as if everyone is blogging tonight, could it be that it's the last day of the month? I agree with Kelly this semester is passing by so quickly. Just a few more months and we are out for Christmas. I'm Still worried about finishing all the competencies before the end of Nov. What will happen if we don't have all the patients? I guess I'll find out when the time comes, till then see you next week. Have a great weekend!

Hey everyone. One suggestion to you when you confirm your patients, be sure to tell them that it is very important for them to call you ahead of time if they have to cancell their appointments. Some patients simply do not show up, and it cause frustration to us.
It is great that we don't have any test next week.
    Have a great weekend.

  • Don't worry Helen...I'm sure you will figure everything out this week when you meet with your advisor. We are all feeling a little worried about completing all of the requirements, but hopefully the instructors will work with us. I know that I am concerned with the radiograph requirements because my first three patients didn't need any. We all have are concerns, so try not to stress about it.

I too, feel very overwhelmed with what I have left to do. Many of my patiens did not need radiographs. Isn't it unethical to take them more than once a year? I keep finding new beach scenes to put on my wallpaper. This is my coping mechanism. It is not really relieving my anixety.

Is this weather great or what??!!! It would be nice if it would've been a more gradual change, but I do love the cold weather. If only the birds would move out of my fireplace so I could have a fire :). I guess that's all I have to say, oh ditto on all the stress and worries and all that, I just didn't see the need to repeat it. Have a great remainder of the weekend. Now it is 21minutes to Monday and I need to go to bed. I know what you all mean about the anxiety and stress. It seems we all have our own things to worry about. For anyone in my group, I still need a Medical Competency(I don't know if I will start a new patient again), so if you start a new patient that has at least 3 meds, let me know...Big Thanks ahead of time!!! Everyone have a great Monday and Tuesday and see you Wednesday!

  • Dont forget everyone that if you have a patient that is a class III or above you have to put them on a reeval. I didnt realize we were doing that for everyone I thought it was for our case patient. So, on your treatment plan make sure you designate time for a reeval.

By Blogger amy, at 6:15 AM

  • Hi guys, tahnks for the reminder to do this, I keep forgetting. I finally am starting my case patient tomorrow. Im so glad. that means tons of competencies. wish me luck. (or is that skills?) LOL

  • I am also in need of a medical competency, but have no new patients that are medically compromised... so anyone in my group, if you end up having a new patient that is medically compromised and you have already done your med comp, PLEASE let me know. I don't think that I will have time to add another patient in to my schedule to do med comp on.
On another note: I finished a 4c patient in only 2 appointments. Yeah, go me!!
    See you all on Friday.

  • I did a stupid thing this Thursday. I spent one and an half hour cleaning the same two quads. that I finished a month ago on my patient until she reminded me, and I only had 45 minutes left for another two quads. I am so glad I finished the other two quads in 45 minutes. However, you can imagine how embarrassing I was! How rush I was! How fast my heart beat! I have to finish the patient in the appointment because I don't have an additional appointment for her. Otherwise, I would not be able to finish all my patients in this semester. Big thanks to Melinda, Anne and Liz who cleaned my cubic for me.

Don't eat too much candy at once tonight, save at least a couple of pieces for tomorrow. Oh and if anyone is into NASCAR I have some tickets I need to sell for this weekend's race, since my lovely fiance will be unable to take me even though we bought the tickets in July.

  • Just curious...is anyone else taking the lovely Jurisprudence exam on Thursday, Dec. 15??? If so, are you studying the entire packet or just relying on what our final is going to cover?

  • My husband said I should blog about the evils of sugars stuck between two molars. I don't know it sounds a little sticky to me. Ha! Ha! Well, It's almost December and only a couple of weeks left. I know that some how we will all make it. It's a crazy time and just a wee bit hectic with the holiday's creeping up as well. I hope that everyone finds time to study and finish papers. We can do it, after all we are top 5%. I'll just leave it at that:)

  • The other day I was at Plano on Rotation and I had a 6 year old kiddo in my chair. I told him that he needed to brush his teeth better so he wouldn't need to get another filling. He asked, "what is a filling", I said, "they are like those silver things in your back teeth". He said, " silver teeth would be tight". It was so funny to see that little guy say that. It told him that white teeth were better--I hope he believed me.

  • Also, I know that is the end of the semester, but remember that we are seperating the instruments into our different groups. My group is on the right, and the other is on the left--it should make it easier for all to find their instruments. Also, I found that a set of my instruments got wrapped and labeled with a first year student's name--and my name is on the cassette--so be careful!!

ps- I was at the VA today and I got to observe a cancer facial recontouring in the oral surgery dept--I had to get a chair because I felt faint--I think I scared the resident Dr.'s :)

  • I know that everyone has said this... but I can not believe that this semester is almost over. Only a couple of weeks left with LOTS of stuff to do. I always seem to wait to the last minute to do anything, so I still have lots of papers to do and of course LOTS of studying to do. I have not been going over the study material online for boards at all and I started to look at some the other day and realized that there is a lot of information that I need to refresh my memory on. I know that we will all do well (TOP 5%), but it will take a lot of time and effort.
Enough for now... Good luck finishing your case patient tomorrow Anne. I finally finished mine on Tuesday. It was definitely a huge relief. As for everyone else... hope you have a great day in clinic or on rotation and see you all on Friday.

  • Some people talked about the study material online for board. What is that? Is it for Jurisprudent test or for National Board Exam? What is the website?

  • Do you think most of the perio final will be straight from the multiple choice questions in the review book...or will they be more in depth where we have to know all of the details the review book covers? There is just sooo much! Can you tell I'm a little stressed? I really can't wait for finals to be over with!!!
